Evie's Journey

ACT I
Ordinary World
Evie Wells is an administrative assistant (PC term for secretary) at the Freer Gallery of Art - Smithsonian Institution. Her ordinary world involves being spoken down to and asked to conduct menial administrative tasks. However, we learn that she graduated top of her class from one of the best history programs in the country and possesses more historical and archaeological knowledge in her brilliant mind than the museum' curators combined. She knows this deep down, but she is still young and not especially confident. She's not asking for more than her lot and pretends, and sometimes even believes, that she's content.

Call to Adventure
Her call to adventure comes when she is asked to help catalog artifacts Christmas night. She opens a box containing a non-descript fragment of a stone tablet that draws her attention, though it is very plain and has no provenance information to identify it. She discovers that the stone is a fragment of the original Ten Commandments and holds the power to take one chosen person, the Intercessor, back in time and allow that person the chance to make choices that could alter the faulty choices of another, thereby interceding to subtly change the course of history in a manner that would save many from needless pain.

Refusal of the Call and Meeting of the Mentor
Evie does not believe the messenger (who is also her mentor) at first and though she takes the stone does not fully believe in its power until...

ACT II
Crossing the First Threshold
...her first journey. She travels first to 15th century Constantinople where she meets her first charge, a young girl who has become pregnant prior to being wed. Evie saves her from death at the hands of her father and fiance. She returns exhilarated but sad that she can not know what greater good she did.

Tests, Allies, Enemies
Evie continues to journey, getting better and better at understanding her historical surroundings and using them to her advantage to save or alter the fate of her charges. Her mentor's diary helps her to keep the faith and tells her of enemies of the stone. There is a family who, since very early on, has believed the stone to be a tool of evil, used to send people back in time to alter history for the benefit of the Devil.

Approach the Inmost Cave
Evie crosses the second threshold when she fully accepts the role as the Intercessor, feeling for certain that she was meant to use the stone.

Supreme Ordeal
However, soon after she accepts her role and begins to believe in her ability, she goes on a journey to ancient Peru. There she saves one person but, in so doing, condemns another to death. She returns with blood on her hands (figuratively speaking) and in crisis. She still can not know how her choices change the course of history for good. She begins to feel the task too difficult, the uncertainty too great and the burden too impossibly heavy.

Reward
You guessed it, the love-interest steps in. He comforts her, though largely for selfish reasons. Evie falls in love. However, the reader knows that Eren is a son of the family seeking to destroy the stone. He means to get close to Evie to get to the stone. He doesn't mean to sincerely care for her. Evie is bolstered by him and also taps into her own inner strength.

ACT III
The Road Back
Evie continues to journey and to see Eren. However, soon she discovers who Eren really is and why his family was sent to the United States years before. She realizes that he has only been seducing her to get close to the stone. She is broken-hearted by his betrayal and cuts off their relationship, going into hiding.

Resurrection
Evie prepares to journey once more but right at the instant when she would be taken, Eren jumps out of her closet and touches the stone, journeying with her. They journey to 1812, where Evie must take Eren in hand and guide him through the history of the period so that he will not be discovered (a task she is very used to by now). At last they are in the act of saving Evie's charge when Evie sees that Eren, wearing an English uniform, is about to be killed by an American soldier. Without hesitation Evie steps in front of the musketball and is killed.

Return with the Elixir
Evie is brought back by the stone alive to her apartment. She and Eren are reconciled. She can now tell him all that she has experienced and he can put an end to a feud his family has been holding on to for thousands of years.
